In February 2023, chapter member Tamara Davis Brown was elected Chair of the Board of Trustees for the Maple Springs Baptist Bible College & Seminary, the first Black woman to hold this position.

As a mediator with the Superior Court of the District of Columbia, chapter member Merrie Nichols Dixon serves as a neutral third party. She facilitates a discussion with landlords and tenants to explore possible solutions or settlements. Over 90% of the defendants are low income minority citizens who might be facing eviction. The mediation process “levels the playing field” and gives both tenants and landlords the ability to air their concerns and work collaboratively to resolve their issues.

As Executive Director of The Holistic Opportunities Propelling Everyone (H.O.P.E.) Center of Carmody Hills, chapter member Dr. Joanne Frederick provides community workshops, academic supervision, and direct counseling to diverse populations that are disenfranchised and underrepresented, such as transgender, LGBTQ, and abuse survivors. Dr. Joanne normalizes seeking therapy for her clients on their journey to wellness.

As Director of People & Culture, chapter member Melony Hughes supports everyone,  especially people in historically marginalized groups. She established “HBCUs For Advertising,” one of several HBCU partnerships, to provide resources for students interested in advertising and increased representation across the industry.

Chapter member Antoinette Kitchen is a national subject matter expert on matters pertaining to promoting economic independence and improving family well-being. She feels honored to be an advocate for human services that advance racial equity and inclusion and to sometimes be the only voice at the table for black girls when federal legislation and regulations are being drafted for disadvantaged children and families.

On March 6, 2023, chapter member Maria Price Detherage, Deputy Assistant Administrator for USAID (Africa Bureau), met the Mobile Clinic for Gender-Based Violence Survivors in Zimbabwe. She discussed how USAID‘s funding for counseling, psychosocial support, economic empowerment, shelter support, and resources for gender-based violence empower women and champion gender equality and inclusion.

Chapter member Gillian G. Richards is a 1988 graduate of Hampton University. She became the First Female Drum Major of Hampton University’s Marching Force in 1986. She first competed for the position of Assistant Drum Major, and after winning that position, it was announced that she had also become the first Female Drum Major in the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) Marching Bands. In 1987, chapter member Gillian became Hampton University’s Head Drum Major.

Chapter member Kristi Smith is a Board of Director for the D.C. Chapter of the National Black MBA Association for 2023-2024. She is committed to creating educational opportunities and economic growth for African-Americans and diverse business professionals.
